In Hindu and Buddhist cultures, the bindi sits at the ajna chakra, the third eye. My lamp gives that third eye a physical form. A red acrylic bindi becomes the iris, lit by a bulb chosen for its drop-like shape, and two concentric acrylic rings under iridescent film suggest an energy field while reflecting viewers back at themselves. Coiled wire holds it all together like reserved, pulsing energy, and the rest pays homage to Indian craft: silk thread wrapped like the bangles at roadside stalls, tassel lashes against the evil eye, a kajal-black front, and a few decorative bindis along the bottom. Switched on, light and eye come together as a symbol of intellect and intuition.
